Hotham Sound, British Columbia

There was a forest here.

Kelp grew off this coast within living memory. Most of it is gone. What is left is bare rock and urchins, few metres down, in water nobody looks at.

Our mission

Restore the room. Then the ocean.

A Schumann device puts 7.83 Hz back into one room: the frequency the Earth has always produced, drowned out by modern buildings. That is the small version of the idea, and it was never meant to be the only one. Every order we take puts kelp back into water that has none.

Every order plants kelp in Hotham Sound, British Columbia.

What was lost

It went while nobody was looking.

There used to be a kelp forest off Comox the size of 770 football pitches. Kelp forests are the fastest-growing on Earth: giant kelp can put on up to two feet in a day, where an oak manages about that in a year. They are also invisible from shore, which is how you lose one without anyone noticing.

How the planting works

It starts with a rock. Not with a seedling.

Spores are grown onto small stones in a hatchery, then the seeded stones go down onto bare seafloor. The method is called green gravel. More in your cart, more stones in the water.

What the kelp does

What grows back is more than kelp.

It is the question we get most: the stones go down, the kelp takes hold. Then what? A kelp forest is working infrastructure. From the first blade it starts four jobs at once, and it does not stop.

Carbon & oxygen

It breathes.

Kelp grows by taking carbon dioxide out of the water and putting oxygen back, and at up to two feet a day, that is a lot of breathing. Acre for acre, a growing canopy draws down carbon faster than a forest on land, and some of the fronds that break away drift into deep water, carrying carbon with them.

Habitat

It shelters.

A forest turns bare rock into a three-storey reef: holdfasts for invertebrates, stems for rockfish, canopy for otters and seabirds. A healthy kelp forest shelters hundreds of species. The urchin barrens it replaces hold almost none.

Food web

It feeds.

Herring spawn on the blades, and young salmon feed and hide in the fronds on their way out to sea. A forest also sheds constantly, and that drift kelp feeds beaches, urchins and deep-water life far beyond the reef it grew on.

Coastline

It calms.

A dense canopy drags on passing swell, taking some energy out of waves before they reach shore, which can help slow erosion. During the day, all that photosynthesis can locally soften acidity, easing conditions for nearby shellfish.

Where sea otters return to keep urchins in check, the forest does the rest. Along much of the BC coast, that balance is still being rebuilt by hand.

Effects build as the canopy grows and vary by site, season and species; how much drift-kelp carbon stays in the deep sea long-term is still being measured. We fund planting and publish the counts. Your order puts kelp in the water, it does not buy carbon credits.

Whose coast this is

Their coast, their work. We fund it.

The Hotham Sound crew, on the water in January.

We do not run restoration ourselves, and we would not pretend to. We fund the crews, hatcheries and Nations who already do this, on their own water, on their own terms, with their own records.

For every 10,000 kelp planted, 20 days of paid work are created for people on this coast.

Questions

Before you decide.

How does the campaign work?

While it runs, every order at The Schumann funds real kelp forest restoration off the coast of British Columbia. Every product counts, with no minimum and no exclusions. More in your cart, more in the water.

How does my order plant kelp?

Your order funds kelp restoration through Greenspark, our impact partner, and the number of kelp scales with what you spend. Bundles do more: we donate twice the amount per dollar spent on bundle purchases. You will see exactly how many kelp your cart plants before you check out.

Where does the kelp go, and how do I know it is real?

Hotham Sound and Powell River, in British Columbia, restored with our local partner, Coastal Kelp. Every contribution is tracked and verified through Greenspark, with reporting tied to real orders. Nothing is estimated or self-reported.

What if I return my order?

You are covered by our 30 day money back guarantee, and your kelp stays funded either way. Once a contribution is committed, we do not claw it back.

What does a Schumann device actually do?

Each device fills your space with a silent electromagnetic field that works in the background to support sleep, focus, and calm. It is a wellness device, not a medical one, and we make no medical claims.

Can I travel with it?

Yes. Our devices are compact and TSA-friendly, so they travel easily through flights, hotel stays, and time zone shifts.

Can I use it around pets and kids?

Yes, and many of our customers specifically do. Our devices produce an extremely low-intensity magnetic field, weaker than a typical fridge magnet, and are completely silent, so there is nothing disruptive about running one in a shared space. If anyone in the household has a pacemaker or other implanted medical device, we recommend checking with their doctor first, same as with any electronic device.
